I enjoy reading and have a Nook ereader which I love, love, love! I also like to search for free crochet books and patterns that are in the public domain. I found this interesting little booklet through Barnes & Noble:

The Merrow System of Crocheting Machinery

Of course I was intrigued! Crochet by a machine? Unheard of! The fact that handwork is the only means to crochet has long been touted as an advantage over knitting. Reading through the booklet, however, has put me at ease. Originally published in 1889 it seems that the "crochet machine" only creates finished edges. The most complicated stitch (and the only crochet stitch, as far as I'm concerned) capable by this machine is the shell stitch.

A neat little tidbit of history, but it's interesting that this type of machine is still being manufactured!

Even if someone were ever able to invent a machine that could crochet a complete fabric it wouldn't be for me. It's all about the process and the satisfaction when I've completed that project and wove in that last yarn end. Ahhhh, sigh, it's a beautiful thing. Now, if they could ever invent something to help me crochet faster - oh wait . . . it's called caffeine!

Simple Single Crochet Dishcloths or Washcloths

Sometimes the simplest stitches and a simple project give me the greatest satisfaction. These easy dishcloths make a great carry along project and are quick to work up. They are a last minute gift idea and wonderful hostess gifts. You can use them in the kitchen or bath.

Materials: 100% cotton yarn (approximately 2 ounces per cloth)
size H (5.0. mm) crochet hook

Finished size: both cloth patterns measure approximately 8 ½ inches square

Gauge: exact gauge is not necessary for these

Pattern #1
The textured look of this cloth is achieved by alternating single crochet stitches in
the back and front loops.

Row 1: Ch 34, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (33 sc)

Row 2: ch 1, turn, sc in first sc. *Sc in back loop only of next sc, sc in front loop only of next sc. Rep from * across to last 2 sc. Sc in BL of next sc, sc in both loops of last sc.

Rep row 2 for pattern until cloth is square. Do not fasten off.

Edging: ch 1, turn, (sc, ch 1, sc) in first sc for corner st. Sc evenly around the entire cloth making sure to work (sc, ch 1, sc) in each of the 3 remaining corners. Sl st to beg sc. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Pattern #2

This texture is achieved by working sc sts into chain spaces of the previous row.

Row 1: Ch 33, sc in 3rd ch from hook, *ch 1, skip next ch, sc in next. Rep from * across. (32 sts total (16 sc, 16 spaces, including beginning space)).

Row 2: ch 2, turn, skip first sc, *sc in next ch 1 space, ch 1, skip next sc. Rep from * across to last space, sc in ch 2 space.

Rep row 2 for pattern until cloth is square. Do not fasten off.

Edging: ch 1, turn, (sc, ch 1, sc) in first sc for corner st. Sc evenly around the entire cloth making sure to work (sc, ch 1, sc) in each of the 3 remaining corners. Sl st to beg sc. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Explorations in Color - Swatching it Square!

I am often amazed at the color combination's designers create. A friend and I were talking about this recently when I began to think that there must be a way to come up with unexpected color combination's. I have read about the basic principles of color theory, and I do have a color wheel that was a great help to me when I created a scrap afghan. But, I thought, there must be something on the web that I could use - and I was right!

Using this site you can create 6 random color choices. You can also lock one or more of the color choices and choose shuffle colors to change the unlocked colors.

Swatch #1

My first try I kept it completely random and decided I would crochet up a traditional granny square of 5 colors, matching the colors to yarn as closely as possible. I chose to leave out the bright green color, and to use the colors as displayed in order starting from the left.

I was pleasantly surprised and I really like the color combination! They are definitely not colors I would have thought of myself.

Swatch #2

For this swatch I decided to leave out the last color. And I didn't want to use another light mint green like I had in the first swatch, so I used a light gray color instead. I can't say that I like the colors, but it was a fun experiment in what colors I probably wouldn't use together.

Swatch #3

For this swatch I left out the blue colors and instead opted for a dark green for the last round. Not a surprising combination, but I could have used more of a gold color for round 4 instead of the buttery off white, which also would have worked well.

Swatch #4

For this swatch I kept choosing shuffle colors and locking in some of the brighter colors. I left out the dark brown in my granny square and again crocheted them in order of the color swatch. This was fun to play with, and I really like the color combo's except for the center beige color. It would have been better with a light pink or bright pink center.

I certainly enjoyed myself doing this experiment. And I will definitely use swatchspot.com in the future to explore other color combination's. Check it out if you have a chance and I'd love to hear about your own unexpected or "different" color combination's.

What's In Your Crochet Kit?

Some time ago while browsing at a thrift store I was lucky enough to find a "Stitcher's Mate" storage box. While it is intended mainly for sewers, it works perfectly for my crochet gear! It measures about 9 inches by 3 inches and stands about 2 1/2 inches tall. It holds plenty of stuff and yet is not too bulky for me to carry around in my project bag.

It is divided into 2 sections, the top section is shallow and magnetized. I carry yarn threaders (I can't live without these!), yarn needles, safety pins, pins and sewing needles.

The bottom section is deep and holds my "Knit-Chek" gauge checker/hook size gauge, pens, pencils, sticky notes, hooks, eraser, row counter, scissors, yarn cutter, tape measure, calculator, and crochet stitch markers. Can't forget the nail file for those pesky nail tears that snag the yarn, and lip balm!

So what do you carry in your crochet kit that you can't do without?

A New Logo and Other New News

I previously had a small berry logo that I really liked, but it didn't quite capture what I was truly looking for. So, I created and designed my own (and I must say that I am thrilled that I was able to do so!). I love that it compliments my tagline (for the love of hook and yarn . . .) I am in the process of changing my website, eCrater store, Ravelry, Twitter, and updating my patterns with my new logo. Eventually I will also incorporate the logo into my Etsy store banner too.

And I am excited to say that I am teaching another Beginner Crochet class. I have 5 students, which is a small class for me, but I think maybe it's because it's a Saturday morning class where my others were weekday evenings. But, I am really looking forward to it! It's a great group and having less students will allow me to be much more hands-on.

And just for fun - a cute mug perfect for the crocheter in your life. (I wish I had a nickel for every time that I had to tell my husband "hang on, I'm counting!")

BeauFO - at least I think so!

I've been in the mood to work up some smaller projects for myself lately. Here's a few lovelies:

I crocheted this cute beanie (Mesh Cap) from a pattern I found in Vogue Knitting Crocheted Hats. I made it in black to match my coat. I needed something for those bad hair days of mine when all I really want to do is run out to the post office, or to the store, or wherever. This hat is perfect!

This pretty headband was made from a pattern by Drew Emborsky, the Crochet Dude. I made mine from Caron Simply Soft yarn. The pattern can be found in his book in all Caps! It works up very nicely and would be a great pattern for anyone interested in learning a basic cable pattern, and I like that it is reversible too!

I really love this project, made with Lion Brand Jiffy yarn, which is really soft and has the right amount of "give". It is the Scalloped Cowl pattern which can be downloaded for free from their website. You'll have to register first, but it's free to join and there are lots of great patterns to be discovered!

And in case you're wondering, BeauFO = beautiful finished object - I hope you'll agree!

Special Olympics Michigan Charity Scarf Project - my finished scarves

Yarn Dyeing Sheep & Wool Festival

Last weekend was lots of fun despite the cool and windy weather. I went to the Sheep & Wool Festival at Mt. Bruce Station and had a great time! I was able to take a yarn dyeing class, which I thought was very informative. The instructor showed us how to dye yarn using the water immersion method using acid dyes. Here's a photo of the gorgeous yarn, dyed in three different autumn colors.

And here's a pic of my yarn swift - getting ready to wind:

The yarn is sock weight, wool, a bit of nylon, and something else that I can't remember (and didn't write down!). Now is the hard part:

What do I want to make? Socks maybe? I'd really like to find a good toe-up crochet sock pattern. Or maybe a pair of fingerless gloves? I wonder if there's enough yarn to make a neck cowl?
Hmm, I don't know yet, but suggestions are welcome :)

Monarch Butterflies Passing Through Michigan and The Butterfly Project

I was lucky to have spotted a lot of Monarch Butterflies around our house the last week of August. Especially around our willow trees, they were hanging out in groups, so I was determined to take some photos. I wasn't able to find a group of them, but this little guy was hanging around.

Cool picture? I thought so! It was getting close to dusk, so I used the auto setting with flash. I tweaked it a bit in Paint.net to darken the background up.

Being curious about the migration I found this great site: Journey North's Monarch Butterfly Migration. Lots of info here, FAQ's, maps, and lists of sightings. There's quite a few sightings listed in Michigan - I'm not surprised!

And along with my Monarch sightings, it called to mind a very special project which I plan on donating to - The Butterfly Project. Thank you Doris! She's my crochet friend that let our crochet team know about this, and you can read Doris's original blog post about the project here. But essentially, The Holocaust Museum Houston is collecting 1.5 million handmade butterflies in remembrance of the innocent children who perished.

I will be sending in some crocheted (of course!) butterflies and I found this great 2-D pattern here. But, they don't have to be crocheted and can be made in any medium. This would be a great project for kids.

Here are a few pics of some butterflies I crocheted. The first I made in worsted weight yarn.

The smaller butterflies I made using variegated embroidery floss. I used to love to cross stitch, but don't anymore, so I have tons of floss. Each butterfly took less than 1 skein and I used a size 3 (2.10 mm) steel crochet hook. I think they turned out really pretty!

Special Olympics Michigan Charity Scarf Project

I was spending some time in the forums the other night and someone had posted information about this Michigan Special Olympics Charity Scarf Project.

I had donated scarves to 2009 World Games and the response was overwhelming and the organizers had extra scarves to share with the local community of Boise. So, I really like the idea of helping out in my home state and will be making scarves to donate. I will encourage my fellow crocheter/knitter friends to do so too, it's an easy and fun way to contribute!

Goal: 2500 scarves

Yarn: Coats and Clark Red Heart Soft Yarn #9518 Teal & #9925 Really Red or Red Heart Super Saver #0656 Real Teal & 0319 Cherry Red. These are the official colors of the Special Olympics Michigan.

Baby Blocks Blanket and Sneaker Booties for Baby Boy

Here's a cute baby blanket that I made for a friend who is due very soon. The pattern is from the February 2010 Crochet World magazine and is designed by Lisa Naskrent for Caron International. I made the blanket in little boy colors to match his new room using Caron Simply soft yarn. I am really happy with the way it turned out, and my friend loves it! It really has a cozy look to it, modern, yet retro too.

I had some extra yarn and couldn't resist these cute baby hi-top booties, designed by Lisa Gentry. So cute! And fun to make too.

I've just started another baby blanket for a little girl. I'm futzing with the pattern, and will post pics when I've finished it. I haven't made baby blankets in awhile, now it's 2 in a row. They say good things come in 3's . . . hmm, maybe another friend or relative is expecting? Wouldn't that be fun!

Continuing Crochet - Weeks 3 and 4

These 2 weeks were busy for the Continuing Crochet Class. Week 3 we concentrated on motifs, joining, seaming, and basic construction of garments.

Above is a slightly modified motif pattern from the book Beyond the Square: Crochet Motifs by Edie Eckman. This is a great book with lots of patterns, and includes tips for making your motifs, finishing them, joining, and much more. It is one of the most detailed and useful books on crochet motifs that I have found.

For the second half of class I demonstrated joining motifs, and seaming. I also discussed basic construction for garments. I brought a finished sweater, an unfinished sweater, and a pair of socks, plus we also talked about glove and mitten construction. I brought along the patterns to show as examples. My goal was to show my students the basics of shaping techniques in different patterns and also to show them the schematics for the sweaters. We also discussed the importance of gauge (which had been stressed repeatedly in the beginners class).

Week 4 I taught them the basic afghan (Tunisian) stitch, and supplied them with simple charts (heart, sailboat, clover) that they could use to cross stitch onto their finished fabric swatches. I showed them a scarflette of my own design I made using a different Tunisian stitch:

They picked up the Tunisian Simple Stitch really quickly, and were eager to move onto bead crochet, which they also learned really quick and were surprised at how easy it is. So, here is the finished bead crochet project, a girls beaded drawstring purse of my own design.

Whew! We covered a lot of different subjects these 2 weeks, but my class was ready and eager to learn. I wish I had taken photos of their finished projects, I am kicking myself for not doing so! One lady made a gorgeous motif shawl, and quite a few finished their beaded bags before the 5th class! I am very proud of them all :)

Continuing Crochet - Weeks 1 and 2

So I haven't been busy blogging (obviously) but I have been busy crocheting and I thought I would post here about what I've been up to. I am currently teaching a Continuing Crochet class that is 7 weeks long, and this Thursday will be our 6th class. I didn't have a set lesson plan because I wanted to find out from my students what sort of projects they would be interested in learning. So, each week I devise a lesson plan and work up a project for the next class. It has been a success, with 8 to 10 students each week.

The first week, I wanted to keep it fun and get some ideas from the students about future projects, so I started with embellishments.

We learned how to make fringe, tassels, pom poms, and twisted cord. I had square cardboard templates for the fringe/tassels and circular templates for the pom poms. Pictured above are the samples that I made up. The blue variegated tassel is made from size 3 thread.

Week 2 centered around color work. I handed out a ripple scarf pattern that I designed, which includes simple color changes.

I haven't yet decided if I'm going to add fringe to mine or not. I'm real happy with the colors I chose for this project. Several of my students have completed their scarves, and they really enjoyed working this stitch and pattern.

The same week I also introduced them to working from color charts. And here is the chart:

Each square represents 1 stitch in single crochet, and 2 stitches in double crochet. I also provided them with basic instructions to complete a potholder.

Above are pictures of the front and back of my sample. We used the stranding method (also called the carry over method) to work the colors for this project.

Pictured below, the top photo shows the same chart worked in single crochet. The picture below that is a single crochet fabric with cross stitches worked over them.

The cross stitch sample above reminds me that I still haven't completed my Search to Be Square, but I have several samples of that to post later on. I will also update you next week of Continuing Crochet - Weeks 3 and 4.

Piece of Cake - A Self Imposed Deadline

Piece of Cake Potholder
Back on a November 2 blog post I challenged myself to a deadline of December 8th (today, he, he) to create a new design. I decided then that I wanted to make a new potholder, and at not quite the 11th hour, I've finished it :)

I'm really happy with the way it turned out, and I love that it is reversible and looks great on both sides. I will be sending out the pattern to be tested and I am working on getting a pdf file together.

Self imposed deadlines are a really great idea for me, and I was really inspired!

Pretty Petaled Placemat and Napkin Ring pdf Pattern

I've finally finished up my latest pattern. This is an intermediate crochet pattern, but would be easy enough for anyone familiar with working in rounds. They work up quickly using medium weight yarn and a size I crochet hook. The placemats are designed to be used with 10.5 inch (26.6 cm) dinner plates, but you can easily adjust the pattern to any size. You could even make a tablecloth to match!

I gave a set as a gift to a friend of mine for her birthday and she really loves them. I have a set I use on my own table and I also made a larger size with sits beneath a soup tureen on my buffet table. I really love the way they look, very pretty, but practical for everyday use!

I also worked one up in a white yarn that has silver sparkly threads in it and it is really gorgeous and would be really beautiful for a holiday place setting.

My Search to Be Square - Part 1

I love to cross stitch on crocheted fabric and I had made an afghan several years ago that featured our family name and a cabin graphic with some pine trees. So when I came across this free KG Chart for Cross Stitch program I got excited and downloaded it. In no time I was able to easily create graph patterns. It is a simple program to master. I drew out a "J" monogram by hand and scanned and imported it into the program. What's great is that this program will create a chart from any image and it is easily editable for stitch placement and color changes. You can also view the chart in "real view" and it looks like an actual cross stitched piece!

Having this program got me to thinking about the crocheted fabric that you cross stitch on and I remember having read somewhere about a "square" crochet stitch. Of course I can't remember where I read that, and searching online was no help. What I do remember from what I read is that using the seed stitch will give you a truer square. Single crochet is fine, but is not truly square being wider than tall. So I worked up a swatch in seed stitch (or the seed stitch as I know it to be). And while I was at it, I decided to work up a simple stitch chart for it using Inkscape which is also a free program.

Here is my swatch pattern:
With a size H (5.0 mm) crochet hook and worsted weight (medium) yarn.
Row 1 (RS): ch 24, sc in 2nd ch from hook, *ch 1, sk next, sc in next. Rep from * across. (23 sts)

My swatch is 23 rows high, and is square - Yay!

Now all I have to do is figure out where the cross stitches should go. To me it doesn't look there is a square pattern in the fabric. *sigh*
I will continue and stitch up some other swatches too; in single crochet, "square" single crochet, and also a Tunisian swatch.

So for now my search to be square continues . . .

Creative Challenges: Self Imposed Deadlines

So, my EtsyHookers team Creative Challenge ended today and it got me to thinking that maybe I should have my own personal creative challenges to keep me inspired. I don't enter the team Challenges because I host and set up the voting polls and blog, so maybe it's time to set some deadlines for myself. I do like to enter contests, especially crochet inspired ones, and both of my published patterns were the result of entering contests! Hmm, I think this could be a great idea for me :)

I am in the process of finishing up a new pattern that hopefully will be listed by next week, and I think for my next pattern I would like to design another potholder. The two that I have already completed, my fried egg and jam/jelly jar's, were obviously food inspired. I think I'll stick with that theme.

Okay, so my personal challenge theme is a food inspired potholder, and I'll set the deadline for December 8th. Now that it's "official" and written on my calendar, there are no excuses!

Audiobooks - A Crocheting Reader's Best Friend

There's nothing like having a few spare moments to relax and crochet. For a big reader like myself, I like to use this time to get some “reading” done too. While there is some controversy whether listening to audios is actually considered reading, I find it's a great companion for crochet, plus I get to listen to some really great books!

Having a library card gives me access to many great titles to choose from. My library also has several formats available; CD's to checkout, MP3, WMA and iPod compatible downloads, plus new Playaways.

So if you haven't yet had the pleasure of listening while you crochet, visit your local library and see what they have to offer. You'll be pleasantly surprised!

Holiday Weekend Crochet - yay!

With the Labor Day weekend gearing up I am hoping that I will have some time to work on new projects! I have a pretty placemat pattern I am working on and a cute Halloween project. I have quite a few books I want to read too.

Speaking of books, I have been looking at Robyn Chachula's Blueprint Crochet. What an awesome book! It is geared toward visual crocheters and has symbol crochet patterns for her lovely designs. I myself have designed a symbol pattern as a bonus to go along with my Star Wash Cloth and Face Scrubbie pdf, and I can honestly say that I haven't found an easy way to create these charts. Kudos to Chachula for her awesome and fresh designs! I think that symbol charts are making a comeback!

Fuzzy Duster - A New Pattern!

I really love the convenience of my Swiffer duster, but I really hate paying for refills. After creating the replacement covers for my floor mop (which can also be used with the floor duster), I decided to try my hand at the hand held duster covers. I really like the way they turned out! Fringed or fuzzy (I'm partial to fuzzy myself =) they work great! Plus I can feel good that they are reusable and eco friendly. Easy care, machine wash and dry too. Right now I just have the crochet pdf pattern listed in my shop, but I will be listing the actual dusters too.

It is a fun pattern to make - I know it's only a duster! But it's a great way to learn the loop stitch, and who doesn't love fluffy fuzzy goodness?

Several weeks ago I stumbled across an Etsy article in the Storque about developers who have created applications specifically for Etsy users. Here I found Soopsee, and I'm so glad I did! I am able to have a home website, RedBerryCrochet.com, that not only features my shop listings, but also can connect browsers with all the other places that I am on the net in my Stockists section.

It is easy to maintain, and has several themes to choose from. With a click of the button I can update my shop listings, and also click on individual items that will automatically post on my Twitter page. I can also set it to automatically feed new items to Twitter. Plus, I can also view my stats, including number of shop hearts, blog posts, Twitter updates, and sales. And Soopsee now allows Google Analytics. I also upgraded to a Sooper Account which offers even more options.

This was a quick and easy option instead of setting up a website completely on my own, which I don't know if I would ever get aroung to. Soopsee is new and still in closed beta, which means that you need a code to sign up without having to wait for the site to open up. If you are interested in signing up for Soopsee right away, before you do convo me at my RedBerryCrochet shop. I have the code available for the first 5 people that respond.

New Crochet Patterns!

I have made this star wash cloth and face scrubbies to sell in my Etsy shop for a few years now and I recently decided to offer my pattern for sale. But, I couldn't leave it at that, for some reason I got it into my head that I was going to create a symbol crochet pattern chart to go along with the written instructions. Wow! What an adventure that was! It literally took me weeks to figure out how I was going create the chart. But happily I did, and I am very proud and pleased with how it turned out!

The duster or mop head replacement pattern came about after looking through a magazine and seeing a knit pattern they had for sale. From the picture I couldn't figure how it would ever stay on while you were using it. The pattern was only for the duster, and I wanted to be able to use it on my mop as well. So, I decided to make my own pattern. This cover I designed fits snugly, and is made of acrylic yarn, which washes and wears very well. Super easy care - just toss it in the washing machine to clean.

Chicken Update - my happy girls!

It's been awhile since I've posted about our chickens. I had good intentions of taking pictures of them every week, but well . . . things happen, lol!

Anyway, here are a few pictures of them at 5 weeks (they are now 9 weeks - already!) And they are all happy and healthy.

It is a real joy to watch them, there's something comforting and soothing about their contented chirps and sounds they make. That is until one decides to peck the other - then all heck breaks loose!

Special Delivery! The Baby Chicks Have Arrived

Our new baby chicks have arrived - delivered right through the USPS! I got an early morning call that the chicks were at the post office waiting to be picked up. Here's a picture of the box before I opened them up:

Cute fuzzy babies, all 25 of them.

We ordered 10 Buff Orpingtons, 10 Barred Rocks (black chicks) and 5 New Hampshire Reds. It's been a few years since we've had chickens, so we are uber excited!

I will post pics as they grow - they grow very quickly, and before you know it, we'll have lovely brown eggs to enjoy.

Wild Weekend Weather - Yikes!

The ongoing joke here in Michigan is if you are tired of the weather, just give it a minute . . .

Saturday was no exception with clear sunny skies and warm temperatures, until the afternoon thunderstorms hit. We had winds of up to 70 miles an hour! I know that's nothing compared to a tornado, but I am always afraid of the high winds. We have so many older trees on our place and surrounding our house. We had only 1 casualty, this 45 foot tall pine. Thankfully it fell in an open area away from Steve's shop.

Amazingly we didn't lose power - at least not until Sunday evening around 5:30 pm. We had some thunderstorms on Sunday, but nothing like those of the previous day. Seems strange to me that the power went out, but happily it was back up by 11:30 pm.

Steve managed to get quite a bit cleaned up on Sunday.

Today is a very blustery day out, with high temps in the mid 80's. More thunderstorms are predicted overnight and temperatures tomorrow will be - hold on give it a minute - in the 50's!
Yikes! There's nothing like Michigan weather to keep you in suspense ;)

The Amigurumi Chickens of Red Berry Farm

Meet the chickens of Red Berry Farm!

Red Rooster has a colorful tail that he likes to flash around the barn yard, and Berry Hen with her gorgeous red comb is the apple of his eye. Baby EggB is a little shy and hasn't decided if he's ready to come completely come out his shell, but he's on his feet and testing the world.

These cute chicken patterns are an easy project for those familiar with working in rounds, and require medium weight yarns and sizes G and H crochet hooks.
Finished sizes of completed chickens will be:
Red Rooster: 5 inches tall including comb, 3 1/2 inches wide
Berry Hen: 4 inches tall including comb, 3 1/4 inches wide
Baby EggB: 2 3/4 inches tall, 2 inches wide

I really enjoyed making these chickens, they are so much fun! It was my first experience creating amigurumi (Japanese word which loosely translated means crocheted small stuffed doll), and I hope to explore the world of amigurumi much more. Enjoy!

It's amazing how quickly time can get away from you! Here are two patterns that I have listed in my Etsy shop since my last blog update:

This is an intermediate crochet pattern requiring simple color changes and embroidery. Requires 100% cotton yarns and a size G hook. Finished size of your potholder will be 6 3/4 inches (17 cm) wide by 7 1/2 inches (19 cm) tall. This pattern includes complete instructions, color photos, and embroidery charts for both the Jam and Jelly labels in a pdf file. My patterns also include a Helps & Hints section on the last page which explain and show (with photographs) techniques and steps that may be unfamiliar to you. Also included are explanations of special stitches and a list of abbreviations used in the pattern.

This is an easy beginner crochet pattern that requires worsted (medium) weight yarn and a size K crochet hook. These blankets are a Quick to Stitch project and the pattern includes complete instructions and color photos in a pdf file. The finished size of your pet blanket will be 19 inches across by 19 1/2" tall. I also include easy instructions for you to customize your blanket and make it as large as you wish.

Originally published in 1985, this revised edition is much easier to read and has all new updated photos.
The book includes 33 chapters, an introduction, illustrations of basic stitches, International crochet symbols, and a pictoral index of all the stitches.
I really love the pictoral index. Set up with 6 columns and 5 rows, the mini pictures are clear enough to search for a particular stitch or design that you are looking for. For example, if you want a stitch pattern that is more detailed vertically than horizontally, it is easy to browse and visually pick out one that may work for you. Each picture in the index also includes a number and the page number where the details can be found.
When you go the page that has the stitch details you will find a larger photo, a symbol pattern chart (I love these!) and step by step instructions.
Every stitch design book is unique and different in its own way, and this book is much more than a guide to basic stitches and the simple patterns that we all know and love. If you are searching for a lacy pattern for a lovely evening shawl, or an openwork pattern for a tablerunner, or popcorn stitch patterns for a new scarf, you will certainly find them here!
This is a great reference book for any crocheter, beginner to experienced, that makes it easy to design and create your own projects.

Boggy Bloggy Me

An alternate definition of the word boggy is "To be hindered and slowed." Yep, that's me. Hindered. And Slow. *sigh*
I have so much on my plate right now that I thought I would take a brief moment to update my boggy blog and put a few things into perspective. So, here's a few things I've managed to accomplish.
1. I managed to update my Etsy banner, and I've also uploaded the new one here.
2. I've added a new pattern to my shop. (That's my Daphne in the pic - awww, isn't she cute!)

3. I'm working on another new pattern that I've almost finished, and I hope to offer with a crochet kit in my shop soon.
4. I finished a scarf project for The Special Olympics.
5. I'm *mostly* caught up with all the EtsyHookers team stuff I have to do.
6. I reminded myself today that I am very grateful - for my wonderful husband and family, for my adorable and affectionate pets, to have a job that I love, and to have the gift of being able to making something out of simple tools of hook and yarn.

A Hooker Book Review - The Crochet Answer Book

This handy little guide is packed with tons of information. The author, Edie Eckman, is also a pattern designer and crochet instructor. In her introduction she states, “I’ve tried to answer some of the most common questions crocheters have and to anticipate some questions you didn’t know you had.” I think she’s accomplished this very well! Set in an easy to read Q&A format with well defined chapters, this book also includes clear and concise illustrations.

Many of the questions are aimed at the beginning crocheter, but I was surprised and delighted to find lots of information included here that would be helpful to intermediate and experienced crocheters as well.
While going through the book there were quite a few questions where I thought, “I wish I had this book when I needed that answer!” Such as; “Do I always have to work a foundation chain?”, “How do I make an oval?”, “How do I tell the Left Front from the Right Front of my sweater?”, “How do I join separate motifs?”, and so much more!

Also included in this guide is a hook size chart, graph paper, a chart for suggested sizes of accessories and household items (such as afghan sizes), standard measurements and sizing charts, standard abbreviations, stitch symbols, yarn care symbols, common crochet terms and phrases, more resources, and an index.

I am very impressed with this book and I think every crocheter should have a copy in their toolkit. Not only a useful guide for questions you may have, but also for those answers you may have forgotten.

Colorful and well photographed, this book is a feast for the eyes. It is neatly organized into 7 chapters and the chapters include:
Hooks, tools, and yarns
Patterns and charts - Explains how to read patterns as well as symbol charts, including filet crochet.
Design - Learn the importance of gauge as well as garment fitting and design basics.
Crochet Techniques - Explains working with basic stitches, edge treatments, and garment details such as pockets, zippers, collars and making your own crochet buttons.
Working in the round
Fun with color - Includes a short explanation of color groupings and color theory. This chapter also includes yarn dyeing instructions for the beginner.
Assembling and Finishing

Found at the back of this book is a Resource section. It includes size chart lists which give average body size measurements: baby, 3 months to 24 months; child, 2 to 16 years; women, X-small to 3X; men, small to XX-large. Also has a handy head circumference chart (preemie through adult). Yarn and laundering symbols are also explained, and like all crochet books of this type should have, includes hook size information, and crochet abbreviations. The index is thorough and easy to use.

A major fault I found with this book is that specific patterns were not included in the Crochet Techniques chapter. For example, in the section about chevron patterns, there is information and photographs on how to create the peaks and troughs. Several swatches are pictured showing variations of the chevron stitch, however, there are no pattern instructions on how to create any of the swatches themselves! You can figure out the pattern from the pictured swatches, but I found this annoying and would not recommend this book to a beginner wanting to learn new stitches. Because of this fault, I would recommend a book of crochet stitches instead.

The “trade secrets” are nothing new and generalized like all the information in this book. There are many other books that serve this purpose better, such as The Crochet Answer Book, by Edie Eckman.

Overall this is a beautiful book and contains a lot of general information that beginners may find helpful, but personally, this is not a book that I would purchase for myself or as a gift.

My Pattern Has Been Published!

I am so excited! Today my issue of Crochet World arrived and I’m in it - woot!

I had sent this pattern in last fall for their pattern of the month contest. It wasn’t chosen for the contest, but the editor contacted me and told me they would like to publish it. Since their editorial schedule had been filled last winter, she told me it would be published this fall. Seems like it took FOREVER, but here it is and I couldn’t be happier.

Crocheting with Twine - Mini Baskets, New Items and Patterns

I like to experiment crocheting with new materials and my latest is 100% natural jute twine. Twine is fun to work with and, of course, much different than working with yarn. It’s very rough on the hands and I noticed that my hands got tired much faster too. But I think it was well worth the effort.

I made a small round basket several years ago and managed to find my pattern that I had created then. It’s amazing to look back at something you created and know that you can make it much better! So, that’s what I did. Instead of using the old pattern I created a completely new one. Plus I also made two other basket shapes, a square and an oval. I like to challenge myself with different shapes and sizes. I think the three baskets work well as a trio.

The round basket, I discovered, also makes a great can cozy and it will also hold a drinking glass. I can imagine using these for an informal party, perhaps a barbecue? Change out the ribbon and they would also be fun for a tiki bar!

Of course, they will also add a nice decorative touch to any room and will hold your small trinkets and treasures.

It’s fun to experiment with new materials and there are so many to choose from! Aside from all the new novelty yarns that are available, I’d like to try using recycled materials. Fabric, plastic bags, yarn from recycled sweaters, the possibilities are endless! I think that’s what I love most about crochet, there is always something new to try and even old techniques tend to get recycled.

Etsyversary! RedBerryCrochet

Today is my Etsyversary! Two years ago I signed up on Etsy to become a seller. With my crochet hook in one hand and high hopes in the other I set about adding some items to my shop. If you list it they will come - right? So wrong! I was busy with another selling site at the time and didn’t devote much to my new shop. And it showed. From July through December of 2006 I had 3 sales.

Fortunately, I decided to get serious about Etsy around March of 2007 (I’m a slow learner) and sales picked up. My highest month so far has been December of 2007 with 24 sales. While I certainly don’t break any Etsy records, I am happy with my sales record and I can only hope that my monthly sales averages increase.

There are always tons of thread posts on Etsy for newbie shop owners and they offer sound selling advice, so I won’t repeat those words of wisdom here (except to list/relist regularly). But what I can tell you is to think positive, relax, create what you love, and to love what you make. There’s someone out there in cyberland who will love it too!

Busy Bee and Ladybug - Catch the Reading Bug, Felted Crochet

It all started with an idea from my boss at the library where I work. She suggested I should make something as prizes for our summer reading program. The theme this year is “Catch the Reading Bug” so what better something to make than a bug? I started with the ladybug and I was really happy that it turned out so well. It is crocheted in one piece and then felted, and the spots and wing line are hand needle felted.

Then I got the idea of making a bee. I had checked out a few picture books with awesome illustrations for inspiration.

My first bee didn’t turn out so well, I just couldn’t get the wings right. My husband commented that it looked like an airplane! So, back to the drawing board, and my next idea turned out much better, and "bee" like.

The bee and wings are crocheted separately, attached, then felted. The eyes are hand needle felted and the antennae is made from stiffened yarn. It took me awhile to figure out what size pin back to use on both these pins. Sometimes what you think is going to be simple turns out to be much more complicated. I was hoping to have these listed much sooner, but it’s been a very busy couple of weeks. But finally, here they are all finished! And I couldn’t “bee” happier with the way they turned out. I also plan on the selling the patterns for these cuties in my shop.

Crochet Hooks - Celebrating Etsy Style!

I came home this weekend to find that I had sold my 200th item. So, to celebrate I decided to do some online shopping at my favorite place (Etsy.com of course!). Here’s what I purchased, this lovely polymer clay handled crochet hook from thefancifulfeline.

I purchased a size G hook several years ago from this seller, and I am still awed by its beauty every time I pick it up. The photos do not show all the intricate details and variations in layers and colors. If you’ve ever seen how long it takes to make 1 design in polymer clay, you can only appreciate the literally hundreds? of hours that goes into one handle. Needless to say, I can’t wait until my new size J hook arrives.

Typically I use wood crochet hooks for my everyday crocheting. I find them much more comfortable to work with and the wood warms to my hands, whereas aluminum hooks are always cold and my hands would literally hurt from using them.
My husband bought me a complete set of Brittany birch hooks and I adore them. I also have a set of rosewood hooks that I use often. My hooks have 2 different styles of ends on them, and depending on what I’m making I’ll choose one or the other.
For my hair scarves I always use the Brittany because I can get really consistent chains with them. For my pet blankets I use a rosewood hook. I crochet with 2 yarn strands and the rosewood hooks hold the yarns much better with no slippage.

The Egg Came Before the Chicken!

As least in my case, lol!
I’ve been working on a set of amigurumi chickens that I haven’t finished yet and in the meantime I came up with the idea for a fried egg potholder. It’s a cute potholder that has a bit of country charm to it.

I designed this potholder from my own drawing and paper pattern that I made. I was very happy with the results and will create more patterns using this technique in the future. It is my goal to design many more patterns and offer them for sale in my shop along with the creations made from them.

I have the fried egg potholder pattern listed for sale in my shop as well as the potholder. I love creating items that are functional as well as fun. This potholder is a whimsical compliment to any kitchen and the double layers keep your hand safe from burns.

Etsy Pet Week - Exciting News!

Some exciting news this week! I’ve been featured in an Etsy Storque article!

That’s my cat B.C. proudly displaying his toys in the main photo and in the photo at right. Last week cbarjcrafts contacted me regarding my photos and asked me if I'd like to participate. Of course I was happy to! She asked me several questions and here are my answers.

What type of set up do you use to photograph your 'pet model(s)'?
I use natural light to photograph my pets, which also works best for my crochet items. Flash photos are too harsh and I don’t like the reflections in the eyes. For indoor shots I also use a tripod and I set my camera timer. Using the timer gives me a few seconds to attract their attention by snapping my fingers or waving a toy above the camera.

Do you have any tips for others who would like to use their pets as product models?
Make it fast :) Take as many photos as you can in a short amount of time. B.C. was resting comfortably on the couch and I just put a white sheet underneath him and started shooting. Take photos when they are relaxed, and don’t fuss too much and get them excited. Keep your voice low and calm. Save the treats until the session is over. And don’t forget lots of praise!

B.C. (aka Barn Cat, aka Bubba Chubs) and Daphne my Yorkie.

I really enjoy taking photos of my pets and I love to include them in my shop listings. B.C. has gotten lots of compliments and many buyers have sent photos to him of their pets playing with their new toys. Hmmm, maybe B.C. should have his own blog . . .

About 7 years ago I bought myself a “Teach Yourself to Crochet” kit and I haven’t stopped crocheting since! It seemed to come naturally to me and I really enjoy creating new things. I’m amazed at the things you can make from simple tools of a hook and yarn. I opened my Etsy shop in July of 2006 and it’s been a wonderful experience. I’ve recently started selling my own patterns in my shop and I’ve been fortunate to have a purse pattern published in Country Woman magazine in Sept 2006. I have a felted scarf pattern I sold to Crochet World which will be published this fall.

I also hope to teach a crochet class this fall. I’ve taught several beginner classes and I really enjoy it. To think that I can possibly give the gift of crochet to someone that will last them a lifetime is truly amazing!
I went through the correspondence course offered by CYCA (Craft Yarn Council of America) and I am a Certified Crochet Instructor. It really helped me to create a lesson plan and pick appropriate projects for my classes. Plus I have a really nice portfolio from the lessons I had to make during the course. I would highly recommend this course if you would like to teach.
